1 John

Summary - There are several theological points. This work seems to have the tone of the gospel of John. The book is not addressed to anyone. The audience is called, "little children" and "beloved". God the father, Jesus the son, and the Holy Ghost are called by name, no one else.

Some verses:

  • That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
  •  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
  •  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
  •  Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
  • Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
  •  Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
  •  We love him, because he first loved us.
  •  For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
  • Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

It's good to outline this book yourself. It is a book of teaching that flows from one short message to another. Look for key words and concepts. It doesn't give concrete examples of sin or helping others, but talks about these ideas. It talks about making petitions to God, but doesn't say what to ask for. The words sin, sins, and sinneth occur 28 times.
